Castle Stalker

Castle Stalker

Castle Stalker in its current form was built in 1446 by the then Lord of Lorn, Sir John Stewart. Originally the land had been the site of a Fortalice built in in 1320 by the Clan MacDougalls before the loss of their tittle Lords of Lorn. The MacDougalls lost their title after their defeat by King Bruce at Brander Pass in 1308 but regained it for a period after 1328. In about 1388 the Lordship of Lorn passed to the Stewarts, the lands including Castle Stalker. In 1620 the Castle passed into the hands of the Campbells of Airds after a drunken wager. It was then held by the family until 1908 when it was bought back by the Stewards. These days it is still held by the Steward family and is fully inhabitable. The Castle can now be visited by private tour a few times a year. Castle Stalker can be viewed from Port Appin.
